The renowned British publication The Guardian has visited the current Lars von Trier exhibition "Breaking Darkness", which celebrates and critically examines the work of the Danish filmmaker. Journalist Miranda Bryant spoke with both Artistic Director Helene Nyborg Bay and author and feminist Sofie Riise Nors, who contributed with a graphic novel to the exhibition, offering a critical perspective on Lars von Trier's portrayal of women. In connection with the current exhibition, we are hosting ongoing events that explore various perspectives on "Breaking Darkness". Here are three examples:

Behind "Breaking Darkness", Trier's Women’s Portraits, and a Graphic Novel with a Critical Contribution
Step into Lars von Trier’s distinctive universe, guided by the passionate guides at Nikolaj Kunsthal, and meet some of the contributors involved in creating "Breaking Darkness" – a total installation tribute to the unique filmmaker. You can experience the exhibition in the company of Nikolaj Kunsthal’s artistic director and some of the creative collaborators who helped develop the exhibition, including Solitude Studio on 7 May. Read more about the three thematic tours here.

As part of the Art Matter Festival, on 17 May, you can attend a discussion with literature lecturer and author Lilian Munk Rösing and visual artist Augusta Atla, who will delve into Lars von Trier's rich visual landscapes and portrayals of women. On 6 June, you can meet author and feminist Sofie Riise Nors in a conversation moderated by Helene Nyborg Bay, artistic director of Nikolaj Kunsthal. Their discussion will focus on Sofie Riise Nors' book "Jeg var din muse" ("I Was Your Muse"), 2024 and her contribution to "Breaking Darkness". Sofie Riise Nors’ work in the exhibition explores a critical perspective on Lars von Trier’s legacy – particularly his depiction of women. The contribution takes the form of a graphic novel. Read more about upcoming events here.

Furthermore, we collaborate with Cinemateket, which is currently screening a selection of Lars von Trier's films. Visitors who have purchased tickets to the "Breaking Darkness" exhibition can watch selected films (with or without expert commentary). Take a look here.

The exhibition "Breaking Darkness" is on display until 27 Juli.
