Green Attraction

Nikolaj Kunsthal has received the coveted environmental certification ‘Green Attraction’ following intensive efforts to become a more sustainable art hall. Read more below

Green Attraction is an environmental certification scheme for Danish attractions, including museums and art galleries. Achieving Green Attraction certification requires working to reduce CO2 emissions and meeting specific requirements in areas such as water and energy consumption and waste sorting. Additionally, it requires institutions to implement sustainable practices in areas like environmental management, employee involvement, procurement policies and the selection of offerings in museum cafés and shops. For museums and art galleries, there are also specific requirements regarding exhibitions, collections management and curatorial tasks.

Nikolaj Kunsthal, which is part of Art and History in the Department of Culture and Leisure, already follows the guidelines of the City of Copenhagen’s environmental and procurement policies, which ensure that energy and resource consumption are actively reduced.

The goal of becoming Green Attraction certified and contributing positively to a greener future has greatly raised the institution’s ambitions, creating even greater engagement among both management and staff in their daily and future sustainability efforts. The ambition and the institution’s journey towards greater sustainability do not stop with certification. For example, in 2024, Nikolaj Kunsthal was part of the project "Circular Exhibition Practices," which works to integrate circular economy principles into strategy, planning and exhibition design. Additionally, Nikolaj Kunsthal conducted energy calculations for the exhibition "Beauty in the Beast" (2023). Read more about Shane Brox’s CO2 neutral universe here

Facts about Green Attraction

• Green Attraction was established in collaboration between the Danish Zoological Gardens & Aquariums (DAZA), the Danish Museums Organisation (ODM), the Association of Amusement Parks in Denmark (FFD), the Educational Activity Centres (VPAC) and HORESTA.

• Green Attraction recognises attractions that go the extra mile to be green and protect the environment. All Green Attraction certified sites must meet a wide range of criteria for environmentally friendly operations.

• A Green Attraction minimises the use of chemicals, reduces energy and water consumption and ensures effective and understandable waste sorting.

• Green Attraction institutions must all document that they meet the criteria and undergo inspection visits before certification – and are continually encouraged to do more and undergo regular follow-up inspections.
