Under the title Art Bar Extravaganza, Nikolaj Kunsthal once again sets the stage for the festival opening. The opening event unfolds both outside on Nikolaj Plads and inside the galleries, where visitors can currently experience a major retrospective exhibition of the American Fluxus artist Alison Knowles.

Cake performance
The opening will feature the premiere of Kim Richard Adler Mejdahl’s work "Cockpiece" - an absurd fellatio performance. The work takes as its point of departure Mejdahl’s investigation of patriarchal power structures and how they shape our understanding of masculinity. "Cockpiece" is inspired by Alison Knowles’ food-based practice and Valerie Solanas’ infamous "SCUM Manifesto".

A red tribute to the temporary and the open-ended. Guests are invited to add and/or exchange red objects in "Celebration Red" (1962), installed in the Upper Gallery.

The opening event also features three re-enactments of Alison Knowles’ performances and happenings. With assistance from Amalie og Floras Middage, the key work **"Make a Salad"** (1962), previously performed at Tate Modern, will be re-enacted. The work involves the audience and dissolves the boundaries between art and everyday life, artist and audience, work and action.

Visitors can also experience the choral work "Piece for Any Number of Vocalists" (1962) as well as an activation of "Celebration Red" (1962), where guests are invited to exchange red objects in the work installed in the Upper Gallery — as a tribute to the temporary and the open-ended.

Depanneur will be serving free ice-cold organic pilsners. First come, first served! Princess Banger will be behind the DJ decks, admission is free, and everyone is welcome.

Art Matter Festival takes place from 27 May to 7 June 2026.
