Portalen til øst

This group show explores Berlin's artistic heyday from the 2000s to today. The exhibition spotlights Copenhagen-based artists who were captivated by Berlin's international scene and the global connections it offered

The group exhibition Portalen til Øst (“Gateway to the East”) delves into Berlin’s golden era, spanning from the early 2000s through the 2010s and up to the present day. The exhibition focuses particularly on the art scene and the visual artists from Copenhagen who were drawn to Berlin’s international profile and the immense opportunities that arose from engaging with other art professionals from around the world. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, new possibilities emerged in the city, making it an endlessly fascinating and inspiring place for artists. Particularly around the turn of the millennium, Berlin’s art scene flourished, rapidly evolving into a hub that attracted artists and curators from across the globe, many of whom stayed for shorter or longer periods.

Now, 25 years later, we see the impact of this fruitful connection between the capitals of Denmark and Germany. Berlin became a pivotal location for many Danish artists to launch their careers, and it remains a vital part of the international art scene. Among the most well-known examples are Olafur Eliasson, Elmgreen & Dragset and Jeppe Hein, though there are many other Danish artists whose artistic careers were ignited in Berlin.

The group exhibition Portalen til Øst features contributions from Ulrik Møller, Tommy Støckel, Lise Harlev, Elmgreen & Dragset, Vinyl Terror & Horror, Gitte Villesen, Cassie Augusta Jørgensen, Dina El Kaisy Friemuth, Alexander Tillegreen and Deniz Eroglu.
